We Heart Solidago

What’s the buzz? Recently, we were excited to read the results of Mt Cuba Center’s latest native plant trial. The goldenrod (Solidago) trial evaluated 70 cultivars and species over a period of 3 years, revealing that these natives are highly adaptable, ornamental, and essential for supporting pollinators. Contrary to popular belief, the trials showed that very few species were aggressive, but could be well-behaved additions to any home garden.

Plants included in the trial were all grown in full sun in ‘average’ neutral soil. All received minimal care, and were watered only in 2020, when they were planted.

Top performers included Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’, which can be seen at the SBG lining the Backyard Bird habitat; Solidago fistulosa (tied for first); and S. sphacelata ‘Golden Fleece’. Another great performer, the shade-tolerant S. speciosa, can be found in the SBG’s layered landscape in the Woodland Garden. Virtually all species trialed  displayed superior garden habits, disease resistance, and floral displays.

Perhaps most importantly, these keystone plants all proved to attract a great abundance and variety of pollinators and birds, acting as crucial late-season resources, and as host plants for many caterpillars.

So don’t let Canada goldenrod fool you. There’s a Solidago or two just waiting to find a place in your heart–and your garden! To view the full report, visit Mt Cuba Solidago Trials
