Go for the Gold

As we transition to autumn, many gardens take on a more muted palette, and goldenrod provides a welcome pop of vivid color. Although it’s often scorned as a weedy, invasive “ditch” plant, there are myriad native Solidago species that are more than deserving of a place in the garden! All species of goldenrod have an extraordinary capacity to support pollinators and other wildlife, and have tremendous ornamental qualities as well. Recently, the Mt Cuba Center wrapped up a 3-year trial of Solidago species and cultivars, evaluating their ecological value and ornamental qualities for the mid-Atlantic region. We’re eagerly awaiting the results–stay tuned! In the meantime, pictured is S. rugosa “Fireworks”, which was the winner of a 5-year trial at the Chicago Botanic garden. Its sensational display of bright flowers seem to burst from the plant like skyrockets, and provide ample resources for pollinators when other plants are waning.
